umidade do solo.
precipita{\c{c}}{\~a}o.
{\'a}reas no globo que s{\~a}o sens{\'{\i}}veis {\`a}s
superf{\'{\i}}cie atmosfera bastante vari{\'a}vel. Enquanto
alguns apresentam um forte acoplamento, outros parecem
insens{\'{\i}}veis {\`a}s anomalias de umidade do solo.
indiquem a intensidade do acoplamento
superf{\'{\i}}cie-atmosfera no MCGA-CPTEC. Assim, por meio de
uma s{\'e}rie de simula{\c{c}}{\~o}es, verificou-se que o
MCGA-CPTEC apresenta um acoplamento superf{\'{\i}}cie-atmosfera
convectiva.
modelos j{\'a} analisados. O acoplamento
superf{\'{\i}}cie-atmosfera n{\~a}o {\'e} uma medida da
destreza do modelo, principalmente porque n{\~a}o existem dados
observacionais a respeito deste acoplamento. Ainda assim, foi
essencial verificar a habilidade do MCGA-CPTEC em simular as
principais caracter{\'{\i}}sticas atmosf{\'e}ricas. Uma
implementa{\c{c}}{\~a}o do esquema de superf{\'{\i}}cie IBIS,
MCGA-CPTEC.
sistem{\'a}ticos no modelo. Estes erros podem estar relacionados
{\`a} simplifica{\c{c}}{\~o}es e defici{\^e}ncias do esquema
superf{\'{\i}}cie, ao inv{\'e}s de erros aleat{\'o}rios
provenientes das for{\c{c}}antes atmosf{\'e}ricas. Contudo, as
vari{\'a}veis atmosf{\'e}ricas em baixos n{\'{\i}}veis,
principalmente nos campos de umidade relativa. Tais
representa{\c{c}}{\~a}o do ciclo anual m{\'e}dio da
precipita{\c{c}}{\~a}o em diferentes regi{\~o}es do globo,
refletindo-se nos totais trimestrais. Em vista disso, {\'e}
poss{\'{\i}}vel afirmar que a melhor representa{\c{c}}{\~a}o
disto, a partir da an{\'a}lise das simula{\c{c}}{\~o}es {\'e}
parametriza{\c{c}}{\~a}o convectiva. ABSTRACT: During the last
decade, an ever growing number of numerical sensibility studies
suggested that the atmospheric variability is strongly influenced
by the land-atmosphere coupling, in particular due to soil
moisture anomalies. Consequently, this thesis aim to demonstrate
that through a better representation of the soil moisture states
in the AGCM-CPTEC initial conditions, improved precipitation
simulations can be achieved. To that end, a number of numerical
experiments were conducted in order to estimate the AGCM-CPTEC to
soil moisture anomalies and then to verify the model capability to
simulate the main atmospheric features, like precipitation
variability. It was necessary to go through these steps since
previous works in the literature have shown that there are
different regions in the globe sensitive to such anomalies where
some present a strong coupling whereas other regions seem
insensitive to soil moisture anomalies. Moreover, there is not, up
to the moment of this thesis, study that investigates the
land-atmosphere coupling strength in the AGCM-CPTEC. Hence,
through a series of simulations it was verified that that model
shows a weak to moderate coupling that is dependent upon the
choice of surface scheme and convective parameterization. In other
hand, all the coupling areas confirm the ones previously found in
past studies using other global models. The land-atmosphere
coupling strength is not a measure of the model skill, specially
because there is no observational data with respect to the
coupling itself. Nevertheless, it was critical to verify the model
capability to simulate the major atmospheric atmospheric
characteristics. A 17-years simulation using the AGCM-CPTEC showed
that this model is capable of producing the major atmospheric
seasonal patterns, however, when using the IBIS surface scheme,
there were large discrepancies in the air temperature and sea
level pressure over the polar region. The vertical temperature
profile also showed significant errors that in turn reflected into
the wind vertical profile. These errors that seem to be related to
some problems in the IBIS land surface scheme implementation led
to the choice of the SSiB land surface scheme and the Kuo
convective parameterization the carry further on the land surface
data assimilation experiments in the AGCM-CPTEC. The analyses of
the differences between the simulations with and without data
assimilation showed that in general, there was a constant addition
of water in the soil, suggesting the presence of systematic errors
in the AGCM-CPTEC. These errors in turn could be associated to
simplifications and deficiencies in the land surface
parameterization instead of random errors from the atmospheric
forcing. Nevertheless, consecutive changes in the soil water
content impacted the horizontal distribution of soil moisture and
consequently the latent and sensible heat fluxes leading to an
improvement in the forecast of the variables in the lower
atmospheric levels, mainly the relative humidity. These
modifications contributed to a better representation of the annual
mean precipitation cycle over different regions of the world, as
seem in the total trimester precipitation. In view of this, one
can say that the better representation of soil moisture in the
AGCM-CPTEC has resulted in an improvement to the simulation of
rainfall. In addition, from the analysis of the simulations one
can say that the results are dependent on both the choice of
surface scheme as parameterization.",
